Working my way through the first season of Friday Night Lights, it occurs to me that shows about high school have a big problem. You’ve got to make the kids old enough to do stuff and get in trouble and maybe even get busy, so they have to be in late high school. But then you’re only left with one or maybe two seasons before they’re off to college, where you have to either unplausibly send them all to the same school, or have them all live in the same apartment.
Efforts to resolve this (I’m looking at you, Saved By the Bell: The College Years) have been notably unsuccessful thusfar. I didn’t watch a lot of Dawson’s Creek, but I feel like they did a reasonable job with this issue.
I wonder how often this comes up at the pitch meetings, or if it’s just a known issue with high-school-based shows.
